Check out the video first , for if we were too explain it too much, it would ruin it. :)
Since posting our file on digg.com in the early morning hours of 09/22/2005, the file was downloaded so many times, it used 478 Gigabytes of bandwidth. This was just in 4 days time. Our video was also directly linked on several other websites. Unfortunately, our web hosting plan only allowed for 60GB of data transfer a month. So we were 418GB over the limit.
On 09/26/2005, I contacted my webhosting company to see what we could about the excessive bandwidth usage that I had just discovered. They informed me that I had incurred over $17,000 in overage fees based on 4 cents per MB over. However, I was able to work out a deal with them to get an unlimited bandwidth plan for $129 a month for six months. We had been paying $29 per month, so this was an extra $100 each month for 6 months. They also told me that even though it was unlimited, that it was not advisable to rehost the files because I might go over the secret cap on the unlimited plan. They would not tell me what that was.
Obviously the video files were offline at this point. We were able to post links on the website of places that had mirrored the video. It was even featured in a couple of vidcasts (see the download links page), including macTV.
On 09/26/2005, we placed a donation link on the website.
On 09/29/2005, we thought it was an interesting story concerning the $17,000 that we posted our webpage link again on digg.com, however, there were no video files directly linked to our site. The bandwidth incurred was minimal because just html was being loaded. We also thought it would be good to get feedback from the digg community. And feedback is what we got - both good and bad. But that is to be expected. Everyone has the right to their own opinion.
On 09/30/2005, we uploaded a slightly better looking site to try and organize some of the information.
